The Scale

Vista Group Holdings (NZX: VGL) is a New Zealand-headquartered cinema technology company that powers cinema operations across more than 100 countries. Their platform processes an estimated NZ$3.3 billion in annual gross transaction value — every ticket sold, every concession ordered, every loyalty point earned and redeemed through their systems.

Their product suite spans the full cinema operation: Vista Cinema (core POS and ticketing), Veezi (cloud cinema management), Movio (customer data platform for cinema), Numero (film distribution analytics), and Horizon (business intelligence and analytics). Each product has APIs. Some are documented on developer.vista.co. The infrastructure is enterprise-grade, battle-tested across thousands of sites, and handles the concurrency challenges of real-time seat inventory management at global scale.

By any measure, this is a significant API platform. It processes more transaction volume than many well-known developer platforms. It handles domain-specific complexity — seat-level inventory, multi-format session scheduling, tiered loyalty programmes — that rivals the most sophisticated commerce APIs.

And yet, if you search npm for Vista cinema SDKs, you find nothing. If you look for typed TypeScript clients for cinema management APIs, you find nothing. If you search for React components designed for cinema booking interfaces, you find nothing.

This is not a gap in the platform. The APIs exist and work. This is a gap in the ecosystem — the developer tooling layer that turns a capable API into a productive development platform.


Why the Gap Exists

The gap is not a failure. It is a natural phase in platform evolution.

Cinema technology companies have, correctly, prioritised operational capability over developer experience. When your platform handles seat inventory for thousands of screens across dozens of countries, the first priority is reliability, performance, and correctness. The API exists to serve the platform's own products and its direct enterprise customers — not a broad developer community.

This is exactly where payment gateways were in 2008, where telecom APIs were in 2010, and where commerce platforms were in 2014. The infrastructure was solid. The APIs worked. Transaction volume is the strongest signal of API value for developers. It means:

  1. The data is real. These are not toy endpoints returning sample data. They are production APIs processing real money for real businesses. The session data reflects actual film schedules. The order data reflects actual bookings. The loyalty data reflects actual customer relationships.

  2. The scale justifies investment. Building developer tooling for a platform that processes $3.3B annually is not speculative. The platform has the transaction volume, the market presence, and the operational maturity to support a developer ecosystem.

  3. The domain is deep. $3.3B flows through a system that manages sessions, seats, orders, loyalty, subscriptions, pricing, F&B, and analytics. Each domain area has rich types, complex business rules, and interesting developer problems. This is not a thin API with three endpoints — it is a comprehensive platform that could support dozens of distinct developer tools.

  4. The market is global. Vista operates across 100+ countries. Developer tooling for their platform has global applicability — the same SDK works for a cinema in Wellington and a cinema in London. The domain types are universal; the localisation (currency, locale, timezone) is configuration.


The First-Mover Position

Developer ecosystems tend to consolidate around the first credible tooling. Stripe was not the only payment API — but it was the first with great developer experience, and it became the default choice for a generation of developers. Twilio was not the only communications API, but its SDK became the standard that others measured against.

The cinema technology API economy has no incumbent developer tooling. The first team that builds a comprehensive, typed, well-documented toolkit — client library, CLI, component library, event system, analytics interface — defines the developer experience for the industry.

This is not a race to build the most features. It is a race to build the most credible developer experience. A toolkit that has production-quality TypeScript, comprehensive tests, realistic documentation, and genuine domain expertise signals competence in a way that a quick prototype does not.

The 3.3 billion dollar API is waiting for its developer moment. The infrastructure is built. The APIs are live. The market is growing. The only thing missing is the bridge between the platform and the developers who want to build on it.
